The Importance of Sourcing: Why Transparency Matters

At Pawfection, Transparency is Key

At Pawfection, we believe that transparency in sourcing is crucial to providing your pets with the healthiest and most nourishing food possible. Too often, marketing claims obscure the truth behind what’s really going into pet food. As pet owners, it’s important to know exactly what you're feeding your family, and we’re here to shed light on why sourcing matters.

Feed Grade vs. Human-Grade: The Truth About Ingredients

Did you know that much of the food fed to our pets is classified as "feed grade"? This means it’s made from ingredients considered unfit for human consumption, often sourced from condemned products. These ingredients are deemed waste due to their quality, safety, or nutritional value and are often repurposed into pet food.

For example, the beef listed in pet food could come from healthy, grass or grainfed cattle, or it could be from deadstock (cause of death unknown) that was transported under poor conditions. The corn in feed grade animal foods, often thought of as wholesome, often consists of husks, stalks, and cobs, far from the juicy kernels you might imagine.

The Protein Your Pets Deserve

Many pet foods rely on ingredients from rendering plants to source the protein intended for obligate carnivores (like cats) and scavenging carnivores (like dogs). These plants process meat byproducts that are often deemed unfit for human consumption.

Rendering plants play a crucial role in managing animal by-products from various sectors, including industrial farming, roadkill, euthanized pets, and food processing. Without rendering plants, these biowastes would pose significant risks to public health and the environment. However, without sufficient standards and regulations, companies look to these plants for cheap protein sources, the result is often low-quality, nutrient-poor "sludge", far from what our any living being deserve as a primary source of nutrition.

This system leads to animals consuming:

  • Meat from dying, diseased, disabled, or dead animals (commonly known as 4D meat).
  • Roadkill.
  • Euthanized pets.
  • Waste from tanneries.

The Shocking Truth About Pentobarbital in Pet Food

The use of rendered meat products in pet food not only raises ethical and nutritional concerns but has also led to alarming safety issues. One of the most shocking examples is the discovery of pentobarbital, a euthanasia drug, in cat and dog foods.

Over the past two decades, pentobarbital contamination has been linked to rendered ingredients like meat and bone meal, often sourced from 4D animals and sometimes including euthanized pets. This contamination highlights a troubling lack of oversight in the pet food industry, with contaminated products remaining on shelves despite regulatory attention. This underscores the urgent need for stricter accountability and better sourcing practices.

The Unmanaged Pet Population’s Role

Not to mention the trickling impact of how unwanted individuals in unmanaged pet populations are handled. Approximately 920,000 shelter animals are euthanized yearly in the U.S. alone. While some of these animals are cremated, others are sent to rendering plants. Notably, cats and dogs are not separated in the rendering process, which leads to the disturbing reality that cat and dog meat can end up in cat and dog food products.

At Pawfection, We Do Things Differently

We believe the safety and health of your pets should never be compromised. That’s why we refuse to use rendered ingredients in any of our products. Instead, we source only the highest quality, human-grade meats to ensure your pets receive the nutrition they deserve; without hidden risks or harmful contaminants.

What is Cellulose?

In some pet foods, fiber comes from unexpected sources like wood pulp; known as cellulose. While cellulose can bulk up stools and aid digestion, it’s not a fiber your pet would naturally ingest in the wild. Cellulose is typically derived from fast-growing trees using chemical or mechanical processes, far from the natural fibers found in fruits, vegetables, and grains.

Grass-Fed vs. Grain-Fed: Why It Matters

The nutritional profile of the animals used in pet food varies depending on their diet. For example, grass-fed beef is higher in essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, protein, and antioxidants compared to grain-fed beef. Grass-fed beef provides a superior source of nutrition for your pets.

At Pawfection, we source from ethically raised, grass-fed animals, ensuring your pets receive the highest standard of nutrition.
